In theory I like it since it could help debug threads and events that don't follow the spec. But it's not the great for privacy.

yup, that's my thinking; although I don't know if the "helps debug" is good enough reason

ultimately clients will do whatever the hell they want, but I can stop my relay from accepting those events... seems like a bit much perhaps 🤔

Coracle does it too. Gossip has an opt-in setting for it.

I think from a data perspective it’s not valuable enough to enable by default. Why bloat client cache, databases and bandwidth? It’s just a tax on each event.

The only reason I mention debugging is because I ran across an issue when building my client where replies from snort are missing the "root" event tag which causes issues for finding/loading them.

But I agree with you they don't really have much practical use.

Debugging poorly tagged threads by creating even more customization seems like an anti-pattern though
