ππ₯³πππΎ Congratulations! Now tell us all about it. I got my first egg this year. A lot more goes into it than βI bought a chicken and it laid an egg.

Haha definitely π, I got 4 ducks & 4 chix.
I have em out in the pasture foraging all day protected w an electric fence, & I keep growing the area they have to roam by adding fence.
About to add another 100' to the existing 200'.
I also have a massive finished Johnson Su compost pile in their area that I made in advance of getting the birds, they eat from the pile a lot.
I harvest the Johnson Su soil every so often to make garden beds, once its done I'm going to build a fresh one in the same spot.
I feed them in the evenings with a feed mix I made myself, I'll release notes on what that is as soon as I confirm all the birds are laying properly - but so far my birds look incredible & everyone comments on that when they see em.
Most organic feed has seed oils by the way, even if they're soy free or w.e other buzzword they're selling you on.
I also started feeding them comfrey & they love the protein it provides!

Thanks! I free range, compost and supplement feed also. How much do you feed per chicken? For example, a chicken that eats feed only will consume 4-6oz per day. Currently, since itβs summer and thereβs lots of forage Iβm giving 1.2oz of supplement feed per bird. They are laying well, shells are healthy, birds look good, etc.
How much comfrey can you safely feed a chicken? I only have a few comfrey plants on the property. I need to figure out how to grow more.
