The hosting company charges by the number of active users. When we had open signup, we experienced steady growth, but it was obvious to me that most new users were junk accounts rather than legit users. To keep costs down and ensure the long-term financial viability of the server, we switched to manual signup. Our growth is slower, but more new users become engaged members.

As a fellow #mastoadmin I'm curious what made you require manual review for new signups to your server vs open signup.
Is it a limitation from Mastodon about not being able to discover bad actors later, spam/scam profiles that just sign up and fill out profile and link to their "business" or something else entirely? :)
