Ordinals is not a protocol. It is a scheme. The usefulness of inscriptions is debateable but not because of Ordinals, because of Bitcoin. Bitcoin provides the immutable chronological storage of transaction data. Ordinaks just sit on the sideline playing a game that purports to track that data. Big difference from being an open protocol akin to Bitcoin, Lightning, or even Nostr.

I don’t think I can disagree with this, other than to say there could be subjectivity in the definition of a protocol.

I almost (and may still) include Taro into the category with Ordinals, just to highlight the ability to store and transmit content in an immutable and censorship resistant way.

Appreciate you engaging here - would love your continued thoughts as you read through.

And what is worse, the game it plays is to break fungibility. In its game each sat is different and unique.
