I would say the best thing to do is look for items priced directly in Monero and start to purchase them when possible.

It especially helps if there's more than one item of a similar type available. For example, #XMRBazaar has quite a number of laptops priced directly in Monero, and so you can get a sense for what an expensive laptop would cost and what a cheap laptop would cost.
