It isn’t obvious why the devil flees if you (just) resist him.

Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

James 4:7

“Then the devil left him, and angels came and attended him.”

Matthew 4:11

Is the revelation here that the Devil is lazy?

I think the first part of the verse in James is the key. Submit to God.

It is with great power that the devil is chased away. But that only happens with faith, not doubting at all. Be careful with that power though...

After these things Jesus found him in the temple and said to him: “See, you have become sound in health. Do not sin anymore, in order that something worse does not happen to you.” - John 5:14

“When an unclean spirit comes out of a man, it passes through parched places in search of a resting-place, and finds none. Then it says, ‘I will go back to my house out of which I moved’; and on arriving it finds it unoccupied but swept clean and adorned. Then it goes its way and takes along with it seven different spirits more wicked than itself, and, after getting inside, they dwell there; and the final circumstances of that man become worse than the first. Matthew 12:43

Maybe this is speaking to the devil’s lack of grit or courage. Having the ability to endure in resistance is essential for a meaningful life. Resisting is a courageous act, whereas cowardice makes them flee.

Idk, just an initial thought 🤷‍♂️🌸
