I’m emotionally preparing to send my 12-year-old son on a plane to Japan tomorrow. With trusted supervision, but a without his parents!

We’ve planned this for a while. Many parents I talk to can’t believe I would let such a young child go so far away on his own. My response is always something like this;

Let go of the fear. Build trust. Be as transparent as you can be for the age they are at, pass your children the secret wisdom of what it’s like to be fully self-sufficient in this world, yet still be well supported and well-loved.

Big changes ahead!

LFG.

I look forward to updates on this journey, for you both!

I used to fly alone all the time as a kid. It builds confidence. It’ll be good for him.

As long as he trusts his instruments, and is thorough with his pre-flight checks, he will be fine

I grew up outside NYC. I would lie about going to a friend’s house, and take the train to Manhattan. Wandering around Central Park and finding my way around pre-smartphone.

A kid needs to feel what it’s like to be fully responsible for themself, without helicopter parents or overbearing adults around. It’s so important.
