The were the only thunderbolt cables in stock. It wasn’t an Apple Store but that was the only brand of thunderbolt cable. They said the 2 meter long ones are over $200 nzd.
Jokes aside. Cables pack a lot of science and engineering in them.
It’s a balanced game between length, cross section, and quality of copper, or whatever material they use (cost).
Signal loss will cause problems.
