Fancier controllers and probably tighter impedance control. But I can't imagine would need to be that much, even with super nice margins.
First I've heard of it. My fast charging USB C type was $3 and I still felt the price was a bit much. Lol. Full charge on a 3amp brick in an hour. ⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️ Thundercats HOOOOO!

They’re overly expensive, but they do work well. With them becoming a more popular item (phones, finally!) I hope we’ll see certified third party cables at a lower price!

that is costly - the higher freq cables have gold threads that makes it costly, but this ones would be for DC. perhaps some other materials used inside ?

Thunderbolt is not a consumer technology.
Intel licensing/certification. Backwards compatibility with both thunderbolt and usb makes the cable itself a new manufacturing process. Then Apple tax on top.

Apple's marketing strategy has always been the same: create a closed ecosystem of devices, wait until the customer buys one of the devices, now the customer is trapped because he has no choice but to buy the rest of your devices. Now you can blackmail him as much as you want.
