Agree. Mesh is pretty consumer, and most of those brands have issues.

Can you run just enough Ethernet to use APs instead? Ubiquity is def a good choice in that case.

I worked at a wireless ISP about 5 years back, we used UBNT to create 25+km wifi links. Great products to work with.

I've got a UDMPro, 24 port PoE switch, and 3 AC Pro APs. I built it out when I got into my new house and it's the first zero compromise network I've ever had. Here's my home "network closet". I want to redo the cables since I didn't make them long enough to make it look clean.

Beautiful. Love that synology. ❤️

Self hosting ftw.

✊ self hosting is addictive. I'm now self hosting everything outside of email (I tried it for a couple years and it ended up not being worth the effort)

I’m setting up a next cloud today. Was thinking about email. Still a pain eh?

Actually it was pretty much fine until I was interviewing for jobs and had issues delivering to Outlook. Lost an opportunity because I couldn't get mail through to them. It turns out MS uses a filter from a "company" that likes to extort people for money. I had a clean VPS IP and they blocklisted me and wanted me to pay a fee to get me off. Told them to go fuck themselves.

These days I just use Protonmail. Any important comms go through my self hosted private Matrix server.

Ok that makes sense. I’ve heard outlook was a bad offender. I think gmail accepts most self hosted email as long as you have dmarc set up correctly.

Yea I had dmarc, dkim, and spif set up. Everyone I email use Gmail or icloud so it never even came up that I was on a blocklist until the job hunt.

Obligatory "fuck Microsoft 🖕"

I’ve come around lately on the company as a whole, but their cloud offerings still suck.

Sataya Nadella has taken several of their technologies in a very positive direction overall though.

Office 365 and azure are still a travesty.

I'm sure there's things they do well. I'm just a rabid FOSS only, corporate distrusting kind of guy and have been for over a decade. XP was the last windows version I used 😄

I understand. Taking .net open source, making Visual Studio free, and building WSL out really affected my day to day life. I can totally understand why people are skeptical though. They don’t have a very flattering past. 🤣 #understatement

That is a beauty home network setup 💜🤙

Thank you 🙏 it's a labor of love

Only have a single Ethernet port but can use Ubiquiti products to setup multiple extenders which is basically the same thing as mesh anyway.

Definitely gonna take a look 👌

I definitely would. The admin interface takes a bit of exploring, but there is a lot of power there, and pretty solid security. I’d get this to start with:

My house is getting one when it’s done.

Yeah I'm looking at a UDR + AP6 Mesh setup, that's perfect for my needs.

You get an intelligent firewall and the ability to vlan that way. Primo setup for the security minded. ❤️

Fuckin bonus been wanting to setup a proper VLAN.

Thank you all! Gonna grab these.

Several of us you can holler at in these comments if you need pointers on the console management. I’m in love with the ones I manage.

This is why I love Nostr 💜

I've used these to setup a campground with wifi, worked quite well. 1 ethernet, the rest was mesh network.

If you use these without a Ui console, they can still operate in dumb mode correct?

Yeah, you just need the Unifi Server UI running on a PC for setup & management, it doesn't need to run all the time.

We’re on a DMP SE at work. The auto channel management has been great because it’s a RF rich environment. Been a life saver.

I've never played with one, looks impressive!

Absolutely perfect for my use case 💯
