Was it not to make it writable again?

There were bits of plastic there normally, which you can break to write protect. Once they are broken, if you need to write, you stuff paper.

It feels like it is coming back from a past life lol.

You could break those tabs off I believe. Uncovered = protected. Covered or unbroken = not protected.

Yup. Little plastic tabs on both “A” (right side tab) and “B” sides were snapped off by hand. This keeps the “allow record” switch from being depressed inside the tape player, preventing it to record on that side.
