Finished "Into The Wild," several years after first seeing the film adaptation. If that film sparked your interest, you owe it to yourself to read the book. It dives pretty deeply into Chris McCandless' psyche, the impact he had on those he met, and other outdoor adventurers who experienced equally tragic ends.

I'm excited to start Steinbeck's "Travels With Charley: In Search of America" (which many of you recommended, thanks!), especially since I'm currently writing my own travelogue.

Into the wild is good but my favorite is Jack Kerouac's "The Dharma Bums". You should come to Japan, they also have some epic hikes.
