I strongly disagree, the government doesn't print at zero cost. There is a cost to manufacture money.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Engraving and Printing,printing a $100 bill costs about 17 cents.

That cost covers:

• Special cotton-linen blend paper

• Color-shifting ink and security threads

• Labor and overhead at the BEP printing facilities

The rest of the bill’s “value” is entirely fiat, backed by U.S. government violence, not gold or the physical bill itself. So essentially they are burning the candle from three sides (the cost of money to print, devalues money, and threatens you if you don't give them money).
