Still better than my efforts. I use entry level smartphones so don't hold much hope for award winning night shots.

Instead of spending bucks on a smarter phone, which I'm bound to break, is there such a thing as an idiot proof digital SLR or whatever a real camera is called, for say 100€ second hand that I can connect to my mac on special occasions?

There might be some cheaper cameras out there, you can pick up bargains these days for digital SLR and/or mirrorless cameras. It’s hard to be more specific than that other than to say have a look on your favourite second hand sites etc.
