might not be a mainland word (or brazilian) it's the traditional portuguese name of the little bar/cafe/grocery stores dotted all over rural Madeira

you seem from your notes to be a native portuguese speaker, i used the word because of that...

these days they tend to be called "snack bar" or "bar somename" or "cafe somename" - yes, some of them also do espetada madeirense - beef chunks on a skewer cooked over coals on a spit, but more often those are specialised places
