The Harry Potter series was an example where, whenever fans voted for their favorite character, it usually wasn't Harry Potter. He'd be in the runningb but not at the top.

Fans were like, "I mean, we all like Harry. But we don't necessarily *love* him. And he's not *fucking memorable*. He's kind of boring.

Many people instead preferred Snape, Hermione, Black, Dumbledore, Dobby, etc.

-The very deep anti-hero or pseudo-villain. Highly conflicted, dark, and emotional, but sides with good. (Snape)

-The smartest one that fixes everything. (The books were read by bookish types, and Hermione was their bookish character identifier.)

-The wise mentor. Usually among the strongest, but from the prior generation. The plot has to factor him/her out. (Dumbledore)

-The chad scary seeming-villain who is actually a hero. (Sirius)

-The ultra-weak character, with charisma and talents, that manipulates things around the margins and morally *has* to fucking win. (Dobby).

Snape was the 🐐

How dare you leave out Lupin! lol

You forgot Voldemort

What about “he who must not be named?”

Crucial villain

Harry Potter is def my fav. Dude is just a straight legend.

Maybe it was part of the magic of the saga, the main protagonist is surrounded by characters whose stories are more impressive than Harry himself. For me, the Wesley and Hagrid family were endearing and wonderful characters.

Love the Wesley fam dynamic.

what IS your fauvorite wesley?

Gotta be George

Potter is the GOAT. It’s settled. It’s more fun to talk about the others, like Hagrid! Legend.

The villain I grew to appreciate was Draco Malfoy. The influence of his arrogant father molded him as a young kid to be a bully like his father, but you can see the internal turmoil, between good and evil, festered inside him as part of his character development over the years. Though I always wondered if Harry would be who he is had he been in Draco’s shoes and Draco in Harry’s. And the same can be said for Draco himself.

I’m more in Sirius’ or Voldemort’s camp

I actually probably would’ve picked Harry. But I thought Leonardo was the best ninja turtle. 🤷‍♂️

Wow.

In a typical hero’s journey, the hero is the least morally ambiguous, which, in some ways, makes them the least interesting. We’re more drawn in by the hard decisions she must make than by the decisions themselves. We more or less know the decision she’ll make, but we empathize with the raw emotion involved in that decision. Will she leave home? Of course, or there won’t be much of a story. But we know how hard that is to leave what you’ve known and face the unknown.

The characters around the hero are much less predictable. They could leave the journey, betray the hero, turn to evil, be revealed as something other than what we thought they were, etc.

The hero is fresh and new as opposed to supporting characters who have deep rich backstories that we know very little about. The supporting characters often have already made their hero/villain journey. I think it’s why the more backstory we learn on supporting characters, especially villains, the less interesting they become.

As a writer, I think it’s best to know a lot about your supporting characters but only show the reader the very tip of the iceberg. I find it helpful to write deep backgrounds and stories for the characters and just keep it with my notes and read over it from time to time but never share it with the reader. Leak things here and there, but for the most part, let the characters show the reader who they are and what motivates them.

With the hero, on the other hand, you’re pretty much laying it all out there. Doesn’t mean they can’t have mystery in their past, they should, but we’re going to learn a lot more about this person than any other character.

Luna Lovegood! 😍

The movies did Harry a disservice. He was way sassier & sarcastic in the books. An abused underdog & an unreliable aloof narrator who still somehow beats the odds & has undying loyalty towards his friends & his new world.

I mean, he didn't even get the girl in the end...

Hermione. She was the brains of the operation. 🧠

I always hated Sirius dying.

Have you watched Brandon Sanderson magic systems lectures? Very good information in there:)

Ginny - young boys falling in love with the younger sister of their best friend. SPOILER: this happened to me in real life, so I am gonna go with Ginny 😅

Ok, I love the Potterverse. Play the games and go to the parks. Nerd. I come across girl Potterheads that just love Draco, naming cats after him. They love the villain. But, I got to go with Harry. Harry was conflicted and was just a kid. Made mistakes but ultimately did what was right, even when it was hard. Forgave Snape and gave his son Severus as a middle name. He was a true friend and was willing to sacrifice himself for them. That being said, for Halloween, I was Snape. Because he was so extra. Allen Rickman did a masterful job.
