Hey nostr, I've been out of sorts again today. I think its a combination of the days being so short now, plus we havent had sunshine in 3 days. But I'm plenty busy with things, and I just got back from an afternoon meeting at church. I still need to label my lip balm tubes, then I'll be done with those. Our peafowl are growing a little, and we're still not sure of their sex. I'm also a little sad that one of the chickens died. I noticed for a couple days that she was lethargic, and i checked for injuries, but could see nothing obvious. She came up to me yesterday, like she just wanted me to pet her, so i did. I know some of you might think its silly, but I'm sad about it.

Anyway, we're settling in for the evening, and maybe I'll do some reading for a while. Yall have a good evening nostr friends, and be kind to yourself. #grownostr #countrylife #homesteading

Ty for your updates.

Hugs. I get to feeling down this time of year when thereโ€™s less daylight and it rains, snows or is overcast. Hang in there.

Sorry youโ€™ve had a hard few days. Fall is full of ups and downs. Hang tuff!

Hang in there ๐Ÿซ‚๐Ÿ’œ

One of our chickens was looking poorly this summer and we noticed her hanging out as close to us as she could. I wasn't surprised when I found her dead under her roost one morning - something was clearly not right - but there was something so sad and tender about how she clearly wanted to be near us as she was struggling. (I'm still trying to figure that out... she associated us with food and care, I guess?).

Anyway - I'm sorry, Maria! Here's hoping you get some sunshine soon.

Thank you, it really was unusual for her to just want to be close to me like that, when usually she would be fighty.

Always sad to lose a good chicken or any member of the farm. I still think about this great little mini chicken we had at my dads farm called โ€œprincess puffballโ€. She was so sweet and one day a hawk got her. It sucked and I still miss the little sweet bird.

Hope you feel better ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿงก

We free range our chickens and losses are frequent and always difficult. My hope is that eventually natural selection will produce a flock with the savvy to survive. So far the theory isnโ€™t working perfectly, but attrition is sloping off after a couple years and 100 or so lost chickens.

I didnt think i would get so sad over a chicken. But it'll be ok.

Chickens can be surprisingly personable. I know each one we have. For a while I had a set of four that closely resembled all the members of Old School Van Halen. Roth was a black dainty bird with a white feather top hat, Eddie was a heavier feather footed, Anthony was feather footed with opposite colors, and Alex was a small crested lanky hen. Probably you had to see them to picture it, but it was so perfect and they hung out together! It literally made me laugh out loud every day at feeding time.

That's so funny! Chickens really do have personalities. And you brought back memories, I saw Van Halen in concert, in Dallas, TX.

That had to have been awesome. I so wish I had seen them. RIP Eddie!
