I’m always amazed at how cheap buying off someone crooked is. They’ll scam you for a few days of their wage, and fail to realize how much of a favor they did for you:
They proved they are a scammer and have saved you so much time and energy to have figured that out now, rather than later. Now they’ll never find work near any of my social circles and will be known as a scammer.
Your reputation is the most priceless asset that takes decades to build. Don’t piss it away for a quick buck or two.

A good friend of mine took his own life, and he had another friend who asked to borrow money in the fall out of that. He promised to repay with a few months and it’s now years later. Saw him come up on a social feed and just thought that I was happy he was no longer in my life.

most people are trash and many feel safer in the company of other trash than around those who are morally pure
this person you describe didn't "piss away his reputation" they were always like this and their friends know they are this way and are still friends with them because they are that way themselves ...
you got played because you didn't understand this dynamic ...
and it gets worse still ... because you are the scammer ... everybody who pumps meme assets is
