In Oz, the Qld govt paid a $1k cost of living credit to every electricity account.

I've essentially had free electricity for the last 7 months.

Yes I've been consuming more electricity.

Yes they turned off people's air conditioners remotely during a heat wave to balance the grid.

Wow. How did they remotely turn off air conditioners?

They've been replacing everyone's electricity meters with smart meters that apparently have this capability.

It's always for your benefit of course.

Crazy that they were able to selectively choose air conditioners though

Some smart thermostats have an embedded feature that you have to opt out of that will take commands.

I've still got an old meter so my AC stayed on the whole time.
