You are responsible for teaching people how you want them to relate to you. If someone you want to keep around is doing something in how they relate to you that you don't like, and you don't kindly tell them how you feel about it and tell them what you want them to do, then you likely won't get what you want from that person.

But if you teach them how you feel and what you want them to do in a kind way, the likelihood of you getting what you want from that person goes up a lot.
