I'd like to believe it's because we're seeking better alternatives and truly want to be social and communicate.

That said, back in the Google+ days, I had the same experience. The quality of posts and replies was much deeper and well thought out compared to what existed elsewhere. Google+ was filled with tech nerds too. Maybe that's the relationship?
