I have thought about this before. It seems that the free relay is unsustainable. It's hard for the runners to go on working If they cannot cover the expenses.

Why not spend less time begging and more time programming? More relays, and more intelligent filtering on the relays, would cut down the workload.
When you make the gossip model a reality in Amethyst, the need for huge relays will be a thing of the past. Looking forward to zap that.
