*The government is in a financial fix because the wheels of the economy are turning slowly. That’s been the case since the financial crash. But it doesn’t have to be. If better-off retirees demanded smaller, appropriate housing, the private sector would begin to provide it, home sales would increase and the economy turn at a faster lick. Otherwise the UK, like so many rich, ageing countries, will be stuck.

If boomers cannot bring themselves to act collectively and patriotically for the greater good, as seems unlikely for many reasons, then it will be legitimate for the government to pursue their lottery winnings with higher property and pension taxes. Still, dear boomer, it was a good ride while it lasted.*

The economy can’t fully wake up until boomers finally move aside. Nature has a way of making room when generations refuse to do it themselves. It’s been a hell of a ride, but it’s time for the next ones to drive.

It’s a tough one. Boomers may say that they simply worked hard to buy a home and they used what they had available (cheap loans, tax incentives etc.)

For me, it’s more important to fix the system than to dislike a particular generation.

For sure. I don’t think they necessarily had any ill intent. I just don’t think they were thinking past their noses. They worked with what was in front of them.

Make asking “who benefits?” great again.

💯

Houses, especially desirable houses are no longer for living in, they are a store of value. Rich Boomers have bought them and as soon as a they’re able they pass them onto their kids and after living 7 years they don’t have to pay ANY inheritance tax. It’s a loophole left by politicians for themselves and for billionaires so they can pass their wealth onto their children.

— The system isn’t broken. It’s working exactly as it was meant to

Houses are a store of value largely because the money is broken.

If the money held its value, politicians would have less power. Less power for the politicians would mean fewer paths to corruption and unjust laws.
