By the way, gyokuro can be eaten, and it's actually delicious. With salt, soy sauce and vinegar, or yuzu. It’s a great addition to rice.

Though I usually throw it away, simply because I tend to drink tea after eating.

Have you tried genmaicha? It's exactly what you are talking about (green tea, mostly bancha or sencha with rice), but much cheaper.
