#culturestr

My great-grandmother lived to 91 years old, so I had a chance to experience the old culture of China.

She had binded feet because that was considered attractive of a woman. Actually, it was a status symbol as well. Only girls from well-off families could afford to do that because girls from poor families who had to work to help support their families wouldn't have functioned well on those little man-made deformed feet.

Whether a woman had binded feet then also became a criteria of her marria-bility.

P.S. Men actually did find these binded feet attractive. How could that be? You got me!! Because look it up, but prep yourself, they look like pig feet!

P.S.S. This takes #footstr to another level!!

Then this begets the question to how different are we now as a society?

Don't women still live with the beauty standards set by men to "mutilate" or "enhance" their body parts?

From lips to eyes, from breasts to butts, from dying hair on the head to shaving hair on the legs, from micro-plastic bras to stiletto heels...

Of course, now standards on looks start to affect men too...

Most women nowadays have the choice, and the freedom to decide, if they really want to do or dont something.

Peer pressure or media pressure is not the same as forcing an infant into a frame.

Yes, not the same.

But ideas along the same line.

Btw, usually around ages 5-8, the process of binding feet starts.

It looks horrible to me. I'd have never guessed that You had Chinese ancesters. 😄

Haha, you passed the test of being a normal human being. 😆😜

Aww I take that as a compliment. But I'm curious why is that? (Per the Chinese ancestor comment)

Sure, take that as a compliment.

Good reminder for me: one can never tell! 😄

Haha, okay!

I ask because I think there was a stereotype you were measuring against, which we all do. That's why moments like this is awesome for us to chip away a little of that conditioning.

That's a good comment. Ya stereotypes haha.

Well, maybe some see me as a stereotype too, lollol. But I can say that I'm not from the US. 😄

I've read this from a book, The Good Earth

by Pearl S. Buck, that I'd snooped at the back of a closet when I was just a little kid, and it has stuck in my mind like a scary thought.
