Is it more convincing, when a person is proud of herself or when other people are referencing someone as being great in something?

I would not say, that a reference of someone about themselves has any value at all. Or you are always buying your stuff in shops that have a great reference from their own sales team on the website? What kind of accomplishment is this please?

No. It is just a lack of intelligence of those who believe it. But usually one learns that once it gets obvious the self proclaimed greatness has no bases in reality.

Generally I question that there is value in evaluating the own successes higher than others to legitimate power over others. When patriotism is not used for legitimating some power over others then it is might not harmfull, but I would still rate it as useless.
