The new upper functions perfectly with a variety of ammo. Shooting with iron sights was actually odd since it's been a long time since I've done that on an AR15. But, I can say that after a quick sight-in, I could tag steel at 200yds offhand (standing, unsupported). That brought a smile to my face.

Other observations and notes:

-A 12.5" barrel with a muzzle break is not as "punch you in the face stupid loud" as the 10.3" barrel (or is it 10.5 and 12.3? 🤷‍♂️), but it's still pretty awful. I tend to hate muzzle breaks.

-A magnified red dot is weird with astigmatism. Changing lighting conditions changed the smear of the dot. I really do prefer prism sights...

-I shot my BIL's pistol better than him and he's the type to get competitive and jealous. 🙄

-next Saturday I will hopefully be shooting a practical rifle match, so I have some prep work to do for that this week.

I prefer the longer barrels. More accurate also.

I care more about terminal ballistics. A 16" barrel is way, way more effective than a 10.5. Plus, less concussion. Though, I do see the case for shorties if you have a suppressor and are only worried about 150m and in.

I have an 18" for me the increased velocity helps me buck the wind a bit.

Yup. It helps, but, you really need heavier bullets with a higher BC for that.

Now I know why I have issues with my 3x & 5x red dots…

Yup. Prsims fix this, but with a few other issues.

Like what? The may not notice em?

Prisms don't have infinite eye relief and some have very tight eyeboxes. This means that they are not as versatile in some ways, but I don't find that to be a hassle since I trained with iron sights and you have to be consistent to use irons correctly.

Prisms typically also have diopter adjustment so you can set it for your eye. This is a huge advantage, too since if you set that well and get a consistent sight picture, you'll get a very clean dot/reticle that you just can't get with dot sights if you have an astigmatism. This means your point of aim is much more consistent.

Having an etched reticle also means that it's still useful if the battery goes dead or electronics fry.

A 1x prism is heavier than a dot sight, but the newest designs are pretty effing light and very durable, in some cases much more so than dot sights.

I tend to prefer a chevron to a dot for aiming, and most of my top picks for prisms have a chevron or arrow.

Thank you for your great insight.

I’m gonna have to start looking into getting a prism.

Any suggestions?

Primary arms has a great selection. Vortex has some good offerings but is a bit dated on some of them. Swampfox Optics has a new unit called the Raider that I may end up buying.

There are some other options, too. You can get a cheap prism from Monstrum to try it out and see if it agrees with your eyes. (Cheap as in $70-85 on sale.) if so, you an get a better one.

Fail fast, fail cheap.

Well all things considered I’m probably just gonna try out the cheap one as I only run 22lr but that raider would look slick on mk4 tactical lol

The Monstrum stuff is surprisingly good for how cheap it is. It's NOT great, but, for a 22 plinker? It'll be totally rad!
