On the one hand, I believe algorithms for things like trending are necessary for UX of the masses… on the other hand, me make memes.

Agreed, on both counts. Given the structure of Nostr, there should be multiple algorithms to choose from and perhaps algorithms the individual can customize.
I like the idea of every component of algos being visible like a toggle setting and then have predefined algos that can be modified where you can see how each one is set and turn individual pieces on/off
