the noise about op return is very loud atm

which either way educates people about

storing text into the chain, is a thing you can do

i am a node runner

and i am not decided yet

so i have to put some more time

into figuring this problem out

nodes are getting more powerful over time

in the sense of computing power

i am happy we are shifting away

from the times of raspberry nodes

i got no problem building and running

a capable linux node

running a node is still very cheap

and i dont see for now how

op return could change that ?

😜

IT'S NOT JUST TEXT. IT'S TRASHY JPEGS AND SIMILAR JUNK.

BASICALLY SOME PEOPLE WANTS TO USE THE BLOCKCHAIN FOR NFTS

i get that

so the limit protects against spam?

could the op return without be used for something else

like something privacy related ?

me as a node runner i can always change my node

but right now i dont get it i have to admit

because you can also spam the blockchain

even with a op return limit ?! imo

it's a matter of degree though... no limit means they can put a lot more data in one transaction

it doesn't matter much in the sense that they are already exploiting witness data but that also is being mitigated in several ways now too

all the legitimate use cases for op_return don't need more than 80 bytes, that covers you for two identifiers and another 24 bytes left over

The curent OP_RETURN size is 80bytes.

You can store short text or HASHES of files.

For example, we wanted to use it to copyright our publications. That is an ok use I think.

But Core wants to get rid of the limit altogether. That open up room for a lot of spam. And also the way they have been dping that is suspicious.

There is a good video for both points of view:
