I am on public relays only and I am not getting spam... maybe is because I am using iris as a client.? I don't know.
Iris rejects all content from authors that your social network has not interacted with. You get way less spam.

Thats one of your major features. Never change that. Global feed on Damus is completely unusable in comparison.

I'm on iris too. And I'm not super concerned about spam at this moment either, but perhaps thinking about the future? (I only just learned how to single out specific relays :))
