The question I have is, how do these apps and websites know you are using a VPN, unless the VPN itself is telling them?
You should start preparing for a future where both TOR and VPNs are blocked by all websites and non-FOSS apps. It's happening.

They keep a list of all the IPs from the VPN provider. There's no solution for this besides getting a shit load of new fresh residential IPs.
Proton has a 'Stealth' protocol, but it doesn't work.
I wondered if that was the case. And I bet ISPs will be black-holed if they don’t divulge the information.
