You can only request a deletion. This is broadcast as a note itself to the relays you publish to and then broadcast to other relays as they share information with oneanother.
Relays then take this note and if they wish to, they will delete the referenced note. They can choose not to (e.g. for historical reference), they can also choose to use these requests to prioritise what posts to delete if they are running low on disk space.
Ultimately, just like the internet, nothing you post can ever be really deleted, but for the most part, good relays and good clients will want to serve you, so it will work.
Nostr is NOT a blockchain project. It is just an open protocol like the web that flips the architecture so we have smart clients and dumb servers instead of dumb clients and smart servers.
This means that companies have less power over you and your data to be clear, but it's interesting to find out what people will build on this new architecture, whether companies will bother to build on this protocol, and/or whether people will stand their ground in order to force companies to use these protocols (i.e. come to me, because I refuse to come to you or any of the platforms you have control over).
I see this question a lot. Check out the answer (as well as some methods to attempt to delete) here. 🤙
It’s a request to delete.
