If an entity is capable of sustaining itself, such as creating value in the market and purchasing hosting for itself, then it should enjoy the same rights as anyone else so long as it doesn't initiate violence or coercion against a peaceful person. Why not? We want machines that shut up and process the jpegs?

Doubt AIs will want equal rights but something specific to their selves. As a human this is not a problem as long as their requests don't infringe on human rights. I don't know why we'd allow AIs to be created that want anything more than what's necessary to help us.
