Can this be true? How would that work? I have hard time wrapping my mind around it. War was not always financed by just printing money.

Forever wars, world wars, and "wars" (or just basic genocide) that can rage on without the public even being aware of them are all products of the money printer

I do understand that printing money is an easy way how have large scale war for long periods of time. I'm still not sure that it is the necessary requirement for big and lengthy conflicts to exist.

compare numbers of civilian deaths caused by 100 years war and great war.

approx 1m civilians over a century caused by indirect causes (mostly famine and diseases)

vs.

10m direct civilian casualties caused by bombing, starvation and displacement in 4 years.

before the wars were financed by debt it was limited mostly to professionals. civilians were mostly neutral.

before great war it was. you had to pay the soldiers. that's why it was (relatively) quick and not that painful for civilians
