There's actually a very good explanation for the difference in "stupidity" between the markets for consumer goods and elections.

Doing research on consumer good directly benefits you: you learn seed oil/fluoride/soy is bad, stop eating it, feel better.

Doing research in politics has no effect because your vote only makes a difference in a vanishingly small number of cases. So there is no direct incentive to do research.
