We have them growing for our first year. So far our deer have ignored them and I've found deer tracks within a few feet of them but they haven't tried to eat them. I'll be putting a fence around them soon to take away the temptation but I was kind of surprised they didn't eat them or the comfrey or strawberries.

I had a patch behind our garage next to one of my compost piles. the deer would nibble a few on the edge but barely bothered with them. I made a mistake and didn't harvest any for a few years and the patch has slowly disappeared.

lesson learned.

I believe it's because sunchokes are a transitional species that prepare the soil for other species to come & replace it.
