My old Ford had that and it never worked for some reason and if it did I never noticed any savings in fuel.

That's because gasoline engines use very little fuel to idle, especially modern ones. You're saving a miniscule amount of fuel and increasing the number of starts on the engine by at least 10x or more.

It was probably even worse since it was the 1.6 turbo ecoboost.

A 1.6L needs so little fuel to keep it turning. For brief stop/starts it probably takes more fuel to restart it than to keep it running for that 2 seconds.
