Automatic stop/start is such a stupid fucking feature that saves very little fuel and wears out your engine faster. Auto manufacturers were forced to add it to a lot of vehicles because of new emissions standards. It fucking sucks.
It slows throttle response.
Your AC stops working when the engine stops turning.
It wears out your crankshaft bearings faster.
When the crank is spinning and there's oil pressure there's a barrier of oil between the crank journals and the bearings. When the engine stops turning the crankshaft settles down onto the bearings. So when it starts there's a half a second where the crankshaft is rubbing against the bearings. This causes wear and tear. I've read that auto manufacturers have come up with better bearing materials to deal with this added wear and tear, but it's still wear and tear and the fact is that the engine would last longer without this stop/start feature. You're talking 30-40 starts per day vs 3-4.
I've tried to disable this feature in my car's settings but it resets every time you turn the car off. I'll have to have my mechanic friend go in with his scan tool and see if he can disable it permanently. It could make the difference between an engine lasting 150k miles vs 300k miles.
