Or turn the left ||| bars into another representation of the level you are. Numbers could work but their are quite ugly.

i was thinking about how reddit does it
Maybe something like ||| -12- |||. So you always see the immediate level of neighbors no matter where you are in the thread.
had this idea way back for expandable and collapsable notifications, mby could be of use for you 🤔💜
on reddit, clicking on a note hides the thread below it if i remember correctly
