It is amazing and it only uses a small amount of electricity each time it rotates. It is great example of some clever engineering.

I would think that this would moves ships faster through locks as they don't have to displace near as much water.

yeah, for ships you'd just do a staged setup probably, like stair steps
it's an interesting thing in the north of england there is a lot more canals and boat things than they really make a lot of noise about
