There was a time when there was no bitcoin+no KYC option for translations through #damus. I rolled out nostr:npub109pkdu0k0dau2cz063lzrgn7dl9l7lk8u7njcm2v8pk4pl2a9uzqf6u4w5 to fix that problem and as time has gone on not too many folks are using it.

I want to help the #nostr ecosystem so I’d like some feedback on a new direction. The biggest question is whether you would consider using the service if we made this change.

I’d like to reach a bigger audience so if you repost this I’ll zap you 1k sats.

New direction:

- API keys with no balance will now show any translations that our service has already translated from other people. We have to cache translations anyway because clients send the same note multiple times as you scroll.

- price per character lowers to 0.07 sats per character instead of 0.1

Tl;dr: anyone will get already translated notes for free. If you pay for the service, which is now cheaper, you get translations on notes that haven’t been translated and in effect donate translations to other folks.

There’s pretty much no scenario we make any money with this service, (which is okay because we believe in #grownostr) and we can lower our price because of cheaper/dynamic hosting with nostr:npub1n0delesspp5qyp9sd6d4fql9g3s96k7g4yyvfmpdncpp542wvxzqksp427 thanks to nostr:npub1utx00neqgqln72j22kej3ux7803c2k986henvvha4thuwfkper4s7r50e8

Would your Grandma understand this?

nostr:npub1w4swqedal6gcw23ndd93tkkdy3zj2l6zjdjvzrhu8rnw0k8lc8lswzprhz are you saying the value of the service isn’t clear enough?

No not at all. I mean most people need super layman descriptions.

Even technically savvy people need to start with laymen descriptions for something new.

This is one of biggest reasons why good stuff sits around unused. Even terms like KYC, in the general public 98% of people don’t know what that is.

Catching the thin wedge of early adoption is a fickle thing. First few users are often the hardest to catch.

Appreciate you.

Agree with you. Perhaps the market is tiny, right now someone needs to meet all three of these conditions to find value in it:

- use #damus

- follow speakers in other languages

- care about price or noKYC enough to not use DeepL

I’ve been able to reduce hosting costs so I can keep it running for a while, even if it’s at a loss. I’m also going to explore web clients like nostr:npub1m64hnkh6rs47fd9x6wk2zdtmdj4qkazt734d22d94ery9zzhne5qw9uaks suggested (they aren’t all open source though unfortunately). Really wanted to do iris and nostrgram but couldn’t get the code for them, although this was a few months ago.
