As today seems to be #opensource shilling day:

Instead of Apple iOS or Googles #Android you (and I) can and should use #GrapheneOS

Instead of Google drive you can and should use #Nextcloud

Most importantly the education about why open source is important should spread.

Companies collect and use your data to get more profit. Nation states can blackmail each and every company to deliver your data.

Your data might be the reason to limit your freedom, put you in jail or kill you. At one point in time the rules might change and then you are an outlaw/criminal for something you did/wrote/saved when it was perfectly legal.

Open source software is important to protect your data and online behaviors.

Been using synology nas for data storage for a long time. Synology has great integration and apps. Best money ever spend imo.

Also put lineageos with microg (de-googled phone) on my phone a while ago. Works well too; particularly with Aurora store. However, there are certain limitation when it comes to ease of use/convenience.

Bought an android phone today to test out #GrapheneOS after the news about #[3] and #[4].

I have heard good things about the Google Pixel phones.

If you are privacy focused, I recommend this podcast episode:

They discuss the trade offs and how there is always the smallest kernel of hardware that is not open source. But Samsung phones seem to have larger portions of this if that is your thing.

Also, if you go with the Pixel, I have heard the 4 isn’t able to keep up very well. Need at least a Pixel 5 or newer.

Update:

#GrapheneOS is working well.

Trying the non-Google Play Store route and testing two different setups on different users.

Biggest challenge so far has been the continued use of iPhone while learning Android. The swipe up/down differences are frustrating for muscle memory.

Haven’t tried using it as a daily driver yet. Mostly because I set it up with no SIM.

One app has presented a challenge and given me an error that a certain function could not be performed because the app was not downloaded directly from the Google Play Store. Still some troubleshooting to do.
