I had dinner with a family elder last week.

He reminded me that my daughter will not carry our family name, nor will my grandson.

It was a subtle comment, but speaks volumes about some conversations/thoughts that may be going on.

My immediate thought was that he was so far wrong on both assertions bc my daughter is not yet married (and she's got no pressure from me or her partner to get married). But I didn't tell him that.

I responded, maybe you're correct, but does it matter these days?!

Their are many males in our family to carry on the name if that is his concern.

They sell gene kits at the pharmacy to tests for these sorts of things now?!

We now have protocols like #Nostr that can be used to track family trees (unalterably) if and when internal family documents artifacts were ever lost.

And if we wanted to rely on government records, don't we all have government ID's now?! Thinking SSN. Why is the name important to him?!

Some additional context;

My niece started her first week at a university this week. She doesn't have to find a job her first year. As a side project and source of income, she's been commissioned by members of the family to combine the broader family documents, family tree artifacts and other projects into one larger, organized and catalogued repository.

Great project for a teenager, driving some lower time preference type questions. Both good and bad.

All that to ask myself "do I care?!"

None of his responses to that question compelled me either way on the matter.

Good morning and happy Friday #Nostr Fam

both my parents changed their last names ( to different ones ) after coming to America.

i am now the only one in the family with my father's last name but i hate my father.

LOL

😂🤣😅

To me the family name doesn't matter at all. And I do have a drawn family tree of around 400 years. Who cares?

Your soul has chosen to carnate in your specific body at this specific time. Its purpose is to gather knowledge and experiences that after You die get condensed into consciousness into your soul.

The thing You know as intuition is is actually your soul providing You advise in the form of a sense or thought that comes from those condensed knowledge and experiences from your past lives.

Mayve this reply is a bit heavy on this topic. 😄

Hey Kasso, I appreciate your perspective. Not too heavy. But do, I wonder if you personally believe this or just putting it out there as a reason why you think it might matter?

PS - Posting this note from a client different from my usual go to nostr client. So not sure how it will work/look.

I put it out there because I personally believe this. So in my way of thinking the continuation of a family name doen't matter at all.

Names are a human social construct anyway, often enforced by a government system. I put the individual freedoms way above that construct.

Everyone is off course free to believe their own 'truth'.
