UV5R?
You could do much of what this video discusses with a uv5r. There is a seller on eBay called n9tax that sells a good roll up antenna like the one discussed in the video. He makes them for a variety of bands and with different connectors, so make sure double check those options.
You can get BNC adapters for a uv5r. Amazon has them, those would be SMA female to BNC female.

Midland makes some good handhelds that come in a set for a decent price. Baofeng makes a uv-5r variant specifically for GMRS.
