No Thanksgiving blooms and no Christmas blooms ☹️, maybe I'll get Valentine's blooms again. #gohomethanksgivingcactusyouaredrunk

Merry Christmas 🎄

Why's that, I've had more than 20 flowers on mine a week ago 😔

I think it just hasn't gotten cold enough to trigger the blooming. One year it bloomed in February, so I'm not counting it out just yet 😂. I noticed a new branch growing on it, so I'll take what I can get. This is inherited from my mother-in-law and it's had a rough life as big pieces have died off. She's still chugging along though.

Nothing on Thanksgiving?

Nada

I’ll bet 100 sats on +/- 1 week on either side of Easter. 😄

Lol, it's never been an Easter cactus but maybe. It has bloomed Nov, Dec, Jan, and Feb. To be fair, it never really gets cold here until late December most years.

Okay. I just spent five years waiting for mine (started from a cutting) to bloom. No dice.

Looked it up. Like poinsettias, they need 8-12 hours of darkness (no artificial light), starting in the fall, and temperatures of 50-60 F, for six weeks, in order to throw them into dormancy where they will bloom. Mine stayed in our family room where a space heater kept nostr:npub1uense4apn73tvh4u20tzlp6u72g4kdustzsm0k0sqy6yuwh5jxlsy97y76 cozy, and he always fell asleep on the sofa with the lights on, two or three lamps blazing all night. Poor cactus never got any cool, dark period of rest. Now it is in my office, where lights are off at night, it is in front of a north-facing window, and the temperatures in that room are much less like a hot-house. We shall see.

I put mine in the colder than the rest of the house half bath for a week or so but we just haven't had a good stretch of cold weather. I knew about the cold but not the light. Will be better about turning this light off earlier. Thank you for sharing! It's had blooms for the past several years, so I'm not too concerned. Fingers crossed for some cooler weather 🤞

Happy to share! It is a nice story how I got it. Mine came from a cutting at Chris’s Kitchen in Frito, Texas, near Lake Meredith. Chris had a bunch of them in her window there, next to where we sat for breakfast. I admired them, she said to take a cutting. I had no idea how to deal with them once they got growing.

I'm happy it took off for you. I had pinched a piece of this one ages ago and it never rooted. I'm a little better with plants these days so I might be able to root a piece now. My sister has one that has gorgeous peachy colored flowers I need to get. She has a nice covered area outside that hers thrives in and it bloomed like crazy. I have too many critters outside for mine 😒

Yes, raccoons just overturned a pot of pansies I have at the foot of my stairs outside, breaking all the stems on the blooms.

Boo 😒

they usually can tolerate even lower temperatures, most cacti get exposed to freezing temperatures during winter nights, although this one is probably a bit too thin and straggly to tolerate much under about 5'C

i'm familiar with these, there is an area in the house i am living in now that gets down towards that range because there is no double glazing or insulation, they also are nice in a hanging pot, draping downwards, and perhaps you may have a covered outdoor area nearby where the heat leaks out a bit and up high it would stay above freezing pretty good.

but i think you might get away with it if you make sure that room does get cool at night.

I'm hoping for a cold snap 🤞

Yes. It should be at least too cool on Christmas to wear sandals and Bermuda shorts!

😂 I just shaved my legs so I could wear shorts. It's been a few years since we've had a warm Christmas.

so, now, extra cold when the cold snap hits. and sandpaper.

you know that women shaving was normalised all part of the nylon industrial complex (for the navy's rope) and that also involved the prohibition of cannabis and ... quite frankly, pornography, in the last 30 years, all the rest of the hair has to be shaved as well.

how many ways in which they have destroyed female intuition and instinct and pheromones the list is getting towards the many score.

i mean, i'm sure gillette and BIC company also had something to do with promoting to sell razors also to women. and basically all of this destroyed the institution of the barber, which i think is a terrible shame as well. i agree that in some cases it's definitely necessary to shave some things, like, my mo is a total disaster if it gets more than about 8mm, really irritates me, nose, cheeks. but it's been a while and for a long time my preference was to use clippers. but for most men, it's not such a hassle and the one thing i like about hipster bois is their beards.
