I sent some lunch money to my friend's mobile money account in Togo, West Africa using Strike's Send Global. It took a couple days (supposed to only take up to 10 min) to go through, but still pretty crazy that it worked. My friend is pretty poor. I sent him $5 which should be enough to go and buy a few decent meals there. He doesn't know that bitcoin was used to facilitate the tx. Not sure if he even knows what bitcoin is.

why did it take two days?

I have no idea. I had to file a support ticket cause the payment was stuck. They never gave me any details as to what happened.

sounds like compliance gulag

Could be a lot of things. Many things don’t work very well in Togo. I lived there for about 2 years. Being able to send money like this to people in villages in Togo is mind blowing even if it took weeks to complete the tx.

👀

what was it like living there?

were you on the coast?

I lived about 3 hours north of the coast. It’s kind of like living on Mars. Almost died many times. 😂

👀

But, but that's mOnEY lAunDErinG😳.

🤨

I sent $5 and he received 2,800 CFA

it's weird how people talk about africa, I live in africa and yeah I know what bitcoin is, also 5$ will only buy you a sandwich.

i lived in the town where my friend lives for years (that's how i know him), so i know how much things cost there. africa is a huge continent and life varies depending where you are. togo is one of the poorest countries in the world.

my rent was $50 a month there and that was considered expensive. trust me, people ain't spending $5 for lunch in that town.

I know it's very different from one country to another, but still poor doesn't mean uneducated. there are probably a lot of people in Togo who know what bitcoin is.

I’m just talking about my friend. I’m not saying that people in general there don’t know what bitcoin is, but I’ve visited and stayed in many villages in Togo and I’m pretty sure the amount of people that know what bitcoin is is very small.

okay 🙂

Knowing something and understanding it are significant degrees of intelligence.
