Curious... is setting up a NIP-05 on a subdomain as painless as I'm hoping? Are there any particular hoops or guides/instructions I should be following?

Depends a little on your technical ability. If you can host things yourself you'll be totally fine. I have an nginx server serve my NIP-05. You could also forward your subdomain to a file with the JSON in it.

To be a little more clear:

The subdomain should point to a server. The server should serve that NIP-05 at /.well-known/nostr.json. Happy to help live if you want.
