I see why you are frustrated my friend. It would be annoying to have the NIP shut down just like that.

For what it's worth, you don't need an approved NIP to do stuff. You can simply keep using NIP-26 whether it is official or not. Or come up with something better.

I don't think burning bridges with fiatjaf is a good idea. He has been vocal against NIP-26 for a while. He should have removed it sooner to avoid confusion.
