nostr:npub1xtscya34g58tk0z605fvr788k263gsu6cy9x0mhnm87echrgufzsevkk5s got hit with a $600 monthly server charge for running Damus Relay.

Damus relay is the most widely used relay of them all.

The fact that hundred of thousands of people can form a peer to peer network transmitting notes and other stuff through Wills relay and still not stress it for $600 a month…. wow.

This same network of plebs tipped Will enough sats to cover his relay costs this month.

Never been more bullish on Nostr.

Also - wasn’t he supposed to be on vacation this week?

I need directions for running relay.

Dear will, integrate off relay protocols to bypass the need for heavy server loads. Its great that people have come out to support you, its a wonderful proof of concept, but I'm concerned with the scaling challenges that will be posed by more data flowing on relays. If more relays have to start charging to cover expenses, which I'm all for, then we going to have fees maybe worse than twitter if you are connected to multiple relays. Imagine having to pay every mining pool you want to mine your transactions, naturally that could push most users onto a small set of miners, I would imagine this poses a risk to nostr. Nostr seems like a good handshake protocol, but I think we need other means to move data once the handshake is established (I'm a dumb guy, this is just my perception). If clients had matrix integrated for DMs then we could provide greater privacy and scaling, like lightning provides bitcoin; keet could easily wallop twitter spaces if it was integrated here, true p2p video calls built right into your feed, where the only thing that touches a relay is an embed link.
