For the sake of brainstorming, why is not being able to delete a note a feature and not a bug?

not an expert here, but I think that the inability to delete a note once published to #Nostr , while sometimes annoying, is also a byproduct of the published note having been spread across independent, decentralized nodes rather than published within a central platform with user accounts.

so it's not so much a feature people want, but a tolerable sacrifice for the sake of decentralization.

anyone who knows more or better than me, please freely chime in here.

Yeah I understand this too but maybe the average person would rather use centralised platforms?

"... maybe the average person would rather use centralised platforms..."

I think the average person does not give it second thought. Not even aware that they are the product.

Or perhaps they are aware, but they just don't care. πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

Because the ability to delete posts is only possible with a centralized single source of truth database, with all the downsides that entails.

Nostr notes are not simple database records, instead they resemble Bitcoin transactions. They always have a public key and a digital signature, therefore they are tamper-proof and provably genuine.

While on Twitter posts are real insofar as they come from their servers (and so they can be deleted) in Nostr the notes are real all by themselves. Even if you managed to delete one of your notes from all relays any local copy on any client could be stored and revealed again at a later time, and its signature would still be valid and point to you.

That's my thinkboi take.

Freedom of speech comes with responsibility.

Freedom to bear arms in such countries comes with responsibility

Freedom to do commerce comes with responsibility.

A lot of people want freedom ideal but they dont want the responsibility that comes with it.

It’s a bug

🧐

Guess things have evolved.
